June 25th was an interesting day as there was a flurry of activity online especially Twitter. As the morning progressed RIP Farrah Fawcett and Farrah Fawcett replaced Iran on the top 10 trending topics on Twitter. However as the afternoon progressed there were a number of tweets stating that TMZ had confirmed that Michael Jackson was dead. Soon the trending changed to RIP Michael Jackson and other similar versions. This trend has continued since then.

My newsfeed on Facebook was filled with updates from my friends giving their thoughts on the mpact of his passing to their lives.

The Bloggosphere was filled with content where people expressed their opinions on the situation or the impact of his music to their lives.

So what is going on in Social Media during the Memorial Event.

The online news channels did a great job of quoting some of the comments from Facebook and Twitter.

So what does this all mean?

In the past our only source of news would have been the media outlets possibly with live TV/Radio coverage and the newspapers possibly creating special editions that evening or the next day.

Social Media has now changed all of this with the traditional news channels competing with every day citizens to provide the news. It has also given us the incredible ability to express ourselves, our emotions and connect with each other. It has also enabled us to break down geographic barriers and socioeconomic as well. We can now share information instantly via photos, videos, text and audio as well as give our feedback on what is going on or what we think or feel.

What’s important is not just what the media channels are saying but the news from the eyes of the everyday citizen. This certainly does not make traditional media obsolete but just provides a more balanced perspective.

What’s been great is the way these traditional media have now embraced social media and are finding their own flavor of incorporating them into their reporting.

Since June 25th Michael Jackson has been dominating the online channels and has given people the opportunity to express their sorrow and grief. The flip side is that this topic has overshadowed other news worth events.

Now that Michael Jackson can rest in peace these social media channels will be free to discuss the next big event.

facebook Connect stories

Daniel Berkal from the Palmerston Group showed us the video -should be on the Refresh partners website soon.

Zipalong.com presented their experiences on facebook connect. Focus on making people’s trips look and feel great. They plan on expanding the use of facebook integration. facebook connect was integrated very early on in the process. Integration took a couple of days. The problem is the complication in the workflow for the authentication of login and consolodate the data. Plans for monetizing by buying tickets etc from the site.

Matt Wyndowe is from facebook who is Canadian, originally from Toronto. Been there for two years now.  Work with large companies how to leverage facebook.

175million users today and the rate of growth is increasing. These are 30 day active users. Canadians have great engagement stats. 70% of active users in Toronto are on facebook.

Now facebook Connect, what is it? Started back in 2006 got requests for gaming channels, comedy etc.. Being an open company they took this into consideration. People give their real identity. Connect people’s real world friends and solidifying them and bringing them online. Distribution for news feed, invation etc. High quality content spread faster and adopted faster than most technologies in the world. Facebook platform was developed.

Bring in all these applications into facebook and facebook connect takes this out to the web.

Allows you and your website and user to authenticate and interact with their friend through your site in a cost effective way.

1 click login

social filtering

massive diatribution

City Search in NT for reviews for restaurants etc….  If you want to write a review and engage it’s not easy to do.  Sign up, find the email and click on link and back to the browser and finally you are there. I have no friends and no photos. This is not a fun place to be right now.

with facebook connect you can sign in with one login. Terms of service is referenced and with one click you are connected. Your profile and your friends from your fb friends that have contributed content on this site will now be available to you.  This is social filtering. Click thtough rates go through the roof.

If you were to write a review and share with their friends. This review now goes on the users profile on fb. Out of 120 friends, 40 to 50 will see this, massive distribution.

On innauguration day, on the CNN.com live the widget for seeing what everyone on fcebook was saying or what your friends were saying. CNN.com Live was referenced on the user profiles thus making people click to the CNN.comLive site. 8,500 per minute during Obama’s speech, now social television!!!

NBA all star game, Oscar Red Carpet. Israely election did social television and the last episode of survivor.

Over 6000 web sites have adopted facebook Connect. iPhoto has this integrated. The number of registered users to the site increases by 20%-100%.  Soical filtering makes this possible. Each seen by 30-40 friends that generates 1-3 clicks back to the publishing site.

The privacy are two ways, facebook privacy and the third party one.  Zinga and iLike have built apps faster using facebook as a primary to login to a site.

Concern about facebook doing major upgrades then loss of content. If a user gives the third party the info. then facebook does not need to know about it.

facebook for business to business

group card.com built an appliation on facebook. built a facebook connect off site flickester, iLike. startups usually build on facebook platform. Big players are not there as of yet but is very appealing to them as they can take advantage of the click through rates.

Part of user website onto facebook? What are the ways to do this? Newsfeed, profile boxes mini apps on the profile.
